In just under nine months, Blumer Lehmann, as general contractor, planned and implemented an extension in modular timber design for Unter Birken Primary School in Cologne.
An extension with classrooms was constructed in the schoolyard. Its architecture blends in with the existing building and is flexible enough to be used subsequently at a different location if necessary.
Modular timber construction was chosen due to the short construction time and the required versatility of the structure. Sustainable construction allows for ideal integration into the existing setting and is also particularly cost-effective.
The compact, two-storey structure with a sloping pitch roof is accessed via arcades. This type of access is cost-effective, beneficial in terms of fire protection, and sustainable, as it saves on additional building mass.
The modular construction offers state-of-the-art technology, a ventilation system, photovoltaic system and heat pump, as well as network technology and digital whiteboards in all classrooms.
