The City of Cologne has embarked on a construction drive to create more school space, with a particular focus on sustainable construction. As general contractor, Blumer Lehmann planned, manufactured and implemented a building ensemble consisting of two structures in the schoolyard of the Cologne-Flittard Primary School on Peter-Griess-Strasse.
With an extremely short planning and construction period of just nine months, a solution had to be found to create new classrooms in the schoolyard that would respond architecturally to the existing buildings, but would also be flexible enough to be able to be used at a different location at a later date.
The modular timber construction extension meets the requirements for short construction times, the required variability of the structure, sustainable construction and cost security.
The two-storey, L-shaped set of buildings consists of a small and a slightly larger structure, connected by shared arcades. This type of access is cost-effective, beneficial from a fire protection perspective, and creates attractive pathways and communication links between the different floors and the playground.
The modular construction has a pitched roof with a photovoltaic system. All the building technology is housed in an external technical module, which also forms the connection to the existing building. The facade is made of naturally treated larch wood and features colour accents around the windows and doors.
