New self-service restaurant and shepherd’s dwelling

On the Carmenna alpine pass, there was a need for staff living quarters as well as infrastructure areas for the self-service restaurant. We were awarded the contract to create the extension.

The standalone building houses living quarters for staff and infrastructure areas for the self-service restaurant and blends in sensitively with the existing Carmennahütte building and the surrounding landscape.

Built on a concrete base, the new building consists of a one-storey section for the restaurant and a two-storey section for the dwelling. The plant rooms and various storage facilities are also located there on the ground floor. The new building is constructed throughout as a prefabricated structure in cross-laminated timber. This high degree of prefabrication offered the considerable advantage of limiting the time needed for construction at 2,000 m above sea level.

The surfaces of the cross-laminated timber panels were left exposed on the walls, ceilings and roof, giving the new building a homely yet modern appearance. To use the self-service area as a hall, it can easily be separated from the self-service counter with shutters.
