Sustainable extension building

The project by ‘Gäumann Lüdi von der Ropp Architekten’ won the open competition to extend the Thurgau government building in Frauenfeld. Blumer Lehmann’s responsibilities include timber construction planning, production and erection of the prefabricated construction as well as the timber facade.

The new Thurgau government building is the first cantonal building to meet the SNBS 2.0 sustainable building standard. The centre section of the extension is designed as a bracing reinforced concrete structure, while the side wings with the office areas – which house 22 shared offices of different sizes and 300 workstations – are planned as a timber construction. Timber as a material contributes to achieving the standard’s aims: high level of material re-usability, high level of thermal comfort and optimal indoor air quality. The timber for the supporting structure comes entirely from the Thurgau cantonal forest.
