In collaboration with their architects, the municipality of Nyon and the Etablissement vaudois d’accueil des migrants EVAM built accommodation for refugees in Nyon. As general contractor, Blumer Lehmann designed the construction with used modules and implemented the project within a very short time frame.
The duration for the entire project, from commencement of the planning to handover of the finished refugee accommodation to the client, was approximately one year. A total of 90 residents, primarily families, were able to move into their temporary home in the spring of 2023.
The living quarters consist of two modular buildings. A three-storey pavilion – formerly designed and used as a provisionary arrangement for a hospital – provides 26 rooms. Additional wash rooms were then installed so that the premises could be repurposed as housing for asylum seekers. Moreover, screw-in foundations were installed in the modular construction in place of the previous steel supports.
The second modular construction has only one storey and was formerly used as a temporary bank. New features inside the refugee home include three offices, a secretariat, a staff room, a kitchen and a recreation room.
The project team were required to devise solutions for fire protection, the district heating pipeline and the roots of the surrounding trees for the two pavilions directly joined to one another to make up the newly combined building. The external steps in front of the entrance were adapted to suit the new development, and a projecting roof was also provided.
