Free form also works by hand

Based in New Delhi, India, Vadehra Builders specialises in interior design for commercial and residential buildings. Their aim is to bring the free form construction to India. This is why a free form sculpture created by us has recently been erected outside the Vadehra Art Gallery in New Delhi as an advertisement for modern timber constructions.

The free form timber artwork was produced in Switzerland entirely by hand. In the process, spruce plywood boards 5 mm thick were cut into lamellas and then pressed and bonded in a mould made by us. The wooden lamellas were double-curved in this way, giving the work its shape. Mockups like this – that is, models made true to scale – are often used in timber construction as a means of presenting a proposed structure. However, instead of making these models by hand, they are commonly produced on a CNC machine.

Intricate lamellas form the mock-up’s crown. A protective membrane and a water drain prevent rapid weathering.
