Sustainable extension

The sustainable and pollutant-free timber construction method was an important aspect. This is why the developers chose the modular design for the extension at Landgraf-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in Giessen. Blumer Lehmann delivered the three-storey extension as full-service general contractor.

To mark the start of the new school year in summer 2023, Landgraf-Ludwigs-Gymnasium in Giessen opened the doors of a three-storey extension that brought an end to the previous shortage of space. There are three classrooms on each floor. The new building also has an IT room, toilets as well as storage and technical rooms.

The 42 timber modules were prefabricated at our production facility in Grossenlüder and assembled into a three-storey building on the construction site in just a few days. The timber used comes from local forestry operations. Many surfaces on the inside – including the facade of the L-shaped extension – are made of timber. The new building is wheelchair accessible thanks to the installation of a lift and the wheelchair-adapted toilet. Due to its design featuring reusable timber modules, the connection to the district heating supply of the city of Giessen and the additional fitting of a photovoltaic system on the green roof, the modular construction is designed to be ecologically and technically sustainable in every respect, as planned. The timber used ensures a pleasant indoor climate in the modern classrooms. This is also aided by ventilation systems, a plentiful supply of daylight and room acoustics.
