Timber, concrete and glass – a perfect balance in this detached home

This contemporary home combines timber construction with exposed concrete and glass frontages. Our commission included the timber construction as well as the facades and creating the terrace. The staggered walls, overhanging balcony and floor-to-ceiling windows and doors were the chief structural challenges.

The detached house in a prefabricated timber design with outer walls in exposed concrete was constructed on a ground slab of reinforced concrete. The two storeys cover 351 m2 of floor area and offer plenty of latitude for stunning interior designs. The detached house has a partial basement level and was connected to the existing garage via a walkway. A new bike storage area was also added to the back of the house.

The floor-to-ceiling glass frontages on the south and west sides of both storeys allow plenty of natural light into the living spaces and provide uninterrupted views of the town of Gossau and the Alpstein mountains. The overhanging terrace on the south and west facades of the upper storey has a projecting roof made from thermo ash to ensure plenty of shade, spacious covered outdoor areas and a feeling of extended space in the bedrooms.

Simple, varnished spruce formwork acts as the facade for the building. Natural timber ceilings, white walls and beige-coloured, polished anhydrite flooring give the interior spaces their distinctive character.
