Blumer Lehmann was already creating samples and mock-ups for the timber construction of the Apple Store in Bangkok during the project development phase. Our team was responsible for the design, engineering, production and assembly of the timber construction, which comprises interior cladding made from oak.
The building’s architecture, with its all-glass exterior walls, offers views of the cylindrical timber core with the overhanging oak canopy inside. The circular layout of the three-storey store includes space for a forum, a meeting room and free-standing displays for products.
Wood core with oak interior cladding
The striking timber cylinder flows into a horizontal area on the upper floor, creating a treetop-like effect, and provides access to the building. The choice of timber for the interior cladding was crucial for the aesthetics and sense of space within the building. We processed around 40 m3 oak from Central Europe into 1,800 pieces of oak using three different production methods. The vertical section was bent around the weak axis with a radius of 2 m. Double-curved oak trusses were crafted for the transition from the vertical section to the horizontal section. The horizontal ceiling area was curved around the strong side. This was achieved by cutting the raw materials into slats and then bonding them to arched trusses in the same order.
